Year 5

Year 5 marks the move for children from lower to upper Key Stage 2. It is an exciting year for the children. The essence of this year is to provide the children with many opportunities to gain in independence and to seek out and accept greater responsibility. During the Summer term of this academic year we will teach Sex Education for the first time.

Over the year, we will cover three main topics: The Ancient Greeks (Autumn), Space (Spring) and Brazil (Summer).

End of phase expectations

Reading – by the end of Y6 most children are expected to:

  • Read and discuss a wide range of fiction, poetry, plays, non-fiction and reference books
  • Recommend books they have read to their peers
  • Learn a wide range of poetry
  • Check the book makes sense
  • Infer characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives for their actions
  • Distinguish between statements of fact and opinion

Writing – by the end of Y6 most children are expected to:

  • Plan, draft, edit and proof read their own writing
  • Write in paragraphs
  • Use ‘who, which, where, when, whose, that’
  • Use brackets, dashes, commas, semi-colon, colon
  • Use punctuation to clarify meaning in sentences
  • Correct and consistent use of tense
  • Use paragraphs to show changes in time, scene, action, mood or person
  • Link ideas across paragraphs
  • Use a full range of punctuation correctly
  • Use, entirely consistently, the language associated with first, second and third person

Spelling and handwriting – by the end of Y6 most children are expected to:

  • Use prefixes, suffixes
  • Spell some words with ‘silent’ letters e.g. knight
  • Use first three or four letters of a word to check spelling, meaning in a dictionary
  • Use a thesaurus
  • Write legibly, fluently and with increasing speed

Maths – by the end of Y5 most children are expected to:

  • Recognise and use square numbers and cube numbers
  • Solve problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Compare and order fractions
  • Add and subtract fractions
  • Read and write decimal numbers as fractions
  • Read, write and order numbers with up to three decimal places
  • Recognise the % symbol and know what it means
  • Convert between different units of measure e.g. kilometre and metre
  • Measure and calculate perimeters
  • Calculate areas
  • Identify 3d shapes from 2d nets
  • Know a range of angles and draw angles
  • Recognise and use reflection and translation
  • Count forwards and backwards with positive and negative numbers
  • Read, write, order and compare numbers to at least 1000000
  • Round any number up to 1000000 to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10000 and 100000
  • Read Roman numerals up to 1000
  • Solve number and practical problems
  • Add and subtract whole numbers with more than 4 digits
  • Use rounding to check answers
  • Solve multi step problems
  • Identify multiples and factors
  • Know and use the vocabulary of prime numbers
  • Multiply numbers up to 4 digits
